Many certificates, one idea
Every digital certificate links a public key to an identity, verified by a trusted authority. What changes is the job it does.
The main types
- Digital Signature Certificate (DSC): signing documents and government filings in India
- SSL/TLS certificate: the padlock that secures a website
- Code signing certificate: proves software came from its publisher and wasn't tampered with
- Email (S/MIME) certificate: signs and encrypts email
- Encryption certificate: protects documents, for example tender bids
Which one do you need?
Filing taxes or company forms needs a DSC. Running a website needs SSL. Publishing software needs code signing. Many organisations need more than one.
